Van Don International Airport (VDO), invested by Sun Group, is Vietnam's first privately owned airport. The airport is located more than 1 hour away from Ha Long City center, a distance of 60km.

With the main role of serving the needs of tourists coming and going from Quang Ninh Province, as well as transporting goods, since its inauguration, Van Don Airport has made significant contributions to the economic, social, and tourism development of the province. In addition, the airport also serves as a reserve for Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi) to reduce passenger overload here.

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), located about 30km from the center of the capital, is the largest airport in Northern Vietnam. This airport has served many international tourists visiting Hanoi and surrounding areas. This is the main entry and exit airport for international tourists coming to Vietnam. Noi Bai has two main terminals, T1 specializes in domestic flights and T2 serves international flights.

In addition to 5 domestic airlines, there are also nearly 40 international airlines operating hundreds of flights every day to and from Noi Bai Airport.

Cat Bi International Airport (HPH) is only 5km from Hai Phong city center. Built during the French colonial period, Cat Bi International Airport was officially put into operation as a civil airport in 1985.

The airport is considered to have a remarkable growth rate in Vietnam's aviation network with passenger service capacity increasing by 35 - 40% each year. In the past 3 years, on average each year there have been more than 2 million passengers passing through Cat Bi International Airport.

Currently, Cat Bi International Airport is a bridge connecting Hai Phong City and major provinces in the country such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang,... with about 11 routes. At the same time, it is also the departure point for several charter flights to Bangkok (Thailand), Shenzhen, Guangzhou (China),...

In addition to mainly serving Hai Phong City, Cat Bi Airport also has a reserve function, reducing the load for Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi).

Vinh International Airport (VII) is located on the outskirts of Vinh City, about 6 - 7km from the city center. Built during the French colonial period, and undergoing many upgrades and renovations, Vinh Airport has now qualified to be recognized as an international airport.

However, the airport currently only mainly operates domestic routes and does not receive or operate international flights. Up to now, there are about 11 domestic routes to and from Vinh International Airport, connecting Vinh City as well as Nghe An Province with major cities such as Saigon, Hanoi, Da Nang, etc.

On average, the airport welcomes and serves more than 1 million passengers each year. It is expected that by 2030, Vinh International Airport will develop more strongly, reaching an average of 7 million passengers/year.

2.2 Phu Bai International Airport

Phu Bai International Airport (HUI) plays a major role in serving traffic and trade of Thua Thien - Hue Province in general and Hue City in particular. The airport is located about 15km from Hue City center. This is also the headquarters of Vietravel Airlines - a domestic airline that just launched in early 2021.

Phu Bai International Airport is ranked 5th in the national flight network with a passenger service capacity of up to 2 million per year. Currently, the airport is under construction of an additional terminal to increase service capacity to 5 million passengers.

Phu Bai International Airport is operating with 4 main routes to and from Hanoi, Saigon, Da Lat, and Phu Quoc. In the coming period, it is expected that there will be more domestic and international routes connecting to Hue City, to optimize the operating capacity of Phu Bai International Airport.

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is the largest international airport in Central, serving mainly domestic and foreign tourists to Da Nang and Hoi An.

Da Nang International Airport is divided into 4 terminals: Domestic Terminal, International Terminal, VIP Terminal, and Cargo Terminal. As of 2019, Da Nang International Airport has served 15.5 million passengers, ranking third among the busiest airports in Vietnam.

Currently, there are 5 domestic airlines and 33 international airlines operating at Da Nang International Airport with a total of 67 routes. Of these, there are 16 domestic routes and 51 international routes. 

3. International airport in the South

Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) has officially been in civil operation since 2004. Since coming into operation, Cam Ranh Airport has made significant contributions to the development of the economy, traffic, and tourism of Khanh Hoa Province.

After many times of investments in construction and expansion, Cam Ranh Airport was officially recognized as qualified to become an international airport. Cam Ranh International Airport owns 2 passenger terminals: Domestic and International. In particular, the international passenger terminal of this airport is known as the first 4-star terminal built according to international standards in Vietnam.

Currently, there are 8 domestic flights from Hanoi, Saigon, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa,... landing at Cam Ranh International Airport. Along with that are a series of international flights from China, Russia, Korea,... bringing tourists from these countries to Khanh Hoa Province.

According to statistics, the number of passengers passing through Cam Ranh International Airport has reached 10 million, with 70% being international tourists. This is also the only airport in Vietnam with a higher ratio of international passengers than domestic passengers.

3.2 Can Tho International Airport

Can Tho International Airport (VCA) is an airport in the Western region, mainly serving traffic, trade, and tourism activities in the Mekong Delta. Can Tho Airport is about 8km northwest of the city center.

Before 1975, Can Tho International Airport was an air force base serving the old regime called Binh Thuy Air Base. Until the liberation of the South, this place was officially exploited for civilian purposes.

Can Tho Airport was recognized as an international airport in 2011 with infrastructure and technical facilities that fully meet international standards. Currently, there are about 11 domestic routes operated at Can Tho airport, connecting Can Tho City with Hanoi, Saigon, Vinh, Phu Quoc, Con Dao,... There are no international flights regularly operated at this airport, but there are only charter flights with destinations in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung of Taiwan.

3.3 Tan Son Nhat International Airport

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is the largest international airport in Vietnam with an area of 850 hectares and a capacity to serve more than 38 million passengers. The airport is located about 7km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

Tan Son Nhat Airport is the headquarters of Vietnam Airport Corporation. At the same time, it is also the main operating area of all domestic airlines. In addition, the airport also receives international flights from about 40 airlines in the region and around the world, including direct flights and connecting flights.

Despite possessing the most advanced infrastructure and aviation technical equipment, Tan Son Nhat International Airport is still overloaded with passengers.

Therefore, in the planning period up to 2030, the airport will continue to be upgraded and expand its area to improve service capacity and ensure it meets the travel needs of passengers.

In addition, the under-construction Long Thanh International Airport (Dong Nai) is expected to contribute significantly to reducing the load on Tan Son Nhat International Airport when it officially comes into operation.

3.4 Phu Quoc International Airport

Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) is an international airport serving Phu Quoc Island, newly built and officially put into operation in 2012. The airport is located about 14km from the center of Duong Dong ward. The birth of Phu Quoc International Airport plays an extremely important role in traffic, trade, tourism as well as ensuring security and politics in the islands.

To date, there have been 12 domestic routes connecting major cities such as Hanoi, Saigon, Hai Phong, Vinh,... straight to Phu Quoc Island. Along with that are international flights Hong Kong - Phu Quoc (regular direct flight), Taipei (chartered flight), Chengdu (chartered flight),... With more than 3 million passengers both domestically and internationally each year, Phu Quoc Airport is ranked 5th among the busiest airports in Vietnam.
