Women have long been not only a part of life but also a quiet source of inspiration that nurtures many beautiful values across generations. From silent sacrifices within the family to their resilient presence in society, their roles have always been deeply recognized in every aspect of life.As a tribute to women, March 8th was established to honor women around the world. Yet, that is still not enough - in Vietnam, there is an additional day dedicated to celebrating the beauty of women across the country. As October comes around each year, the atmosphere seems to become gentler in its own very unique way. The weather also softens, the autumn sky is like a gentle autumn sky, like a soft piece of music, weaving through every small corner of the streets, awakening very tender emotions in people’s hearts. And in that gentle atmosphere, there is a commemorative day dedicated especially to Vietnamese women. October 20th, Vietnamese Women’s Day, is not merely a point in time on the calendar, but also an occasion for us to pause, look back, and appreciate the women who appear in each person’s life and play a very important role.
They can be grandmothers, mothers who have devoted their entire youth to taking care of the family, they can be sisters who grew up with you, a wife who has shared hardships with you, or female colleagues, or simply the women we encounter in everyday life. Each person carries within herself a story, a unique beauty, and a silent sacrifice that is not always visible.
2. The Story Behind a Special Day
Across the world, March 8th is celebrated to honor women globally, and in Vietnam there is an additional special day dedicated solely to Vietnamese women. This day is also associated with an important historical event, which is the founding of the Vietnam Women’s Union in 1930. It also marks the recognition of women’s active participation in movements for national independence as well as gender equality.
At that time, when Vietnam was still a backward and underdeveloped country, recognizing the contributions of women was not an easy task. In a social context filled with prejudice and barriers, women not only shouldered family responsibilities but also bravely stood up for the cause of national struggle. For that reason, the image of Vietnamese women has always been associated with resilience and diligence. Since then, October 20th has become not only an occasion for honoring them but also a proud reminder of the long journey that Vietnamese women have gone through.
3. Vietnamese Women: A Story Across Time
If we look back at the flow of history, the image of Vietnamese women has always been associated with resilience. From the indomitable heroines during the periods of resisting foreign invaders to the mothers and wives in wartime who silently sent their husbands and children to the battlefield, only to endure loss and pain afterward.
The Trung Sisters: are a shining symbol of the indomitable spirit of Vietnamese women in the early days of nation -building. In the context of the country being under foreign domination, the Trung Sisters bravely rose up in rebellion, leading the people to reclaim sovereignty. The image of women riding elephants and raising their swords not only affirms a strong patriotism but also a firm will and extraordinary courage. To this day, the image of the Trung Sisters remains a source of pride and inspiration for many generations.
Vo Thi Sau: is a symbol of courage and the indomitable spirit of Vietnamese youth. Despite her young age, she was ready to join the resistance and face the enemy. Even when facing sacrifice, that young girl still maintained a resilient spirit, without any fear.
Nguyen Thi Dinh: a typical female general representing the intelligence and bravery of Vietnamese women during the resistance period. She was not only a talented commander but also a pioneer of the “Long -Haired Army” movement. The image of a woman in a ba ba outfit with a checkered scarf typical of the South represents the resilient and indomitable Vietnamese woman.
Nguyen Thi Binh: a Vietnamese woman with a gentle demeanor yet steadfast, soft yet full of strength. She appeared as a diplomat, contributing significantly to international negotiations, especially the Paris Peace Talks, helping Vietnam move toward independence. Her calmness, intelligence, and firm stance helped elevate Vietnam’s position on the international stage, becoming a model of intellectual strength and sophistication. She also served as Vice President of Vietnam (1992–2002) and was the Minister of Education after 1975.
Heroic Vietnamese Mothers Nguyen Thi Thu (Mother Thu): is a moving image of the quiet, simple yet extraordinarily great sacrifice of Vietnamese women. Her entire life was tied to loss as she successively sent her husband and children to the battlefield and none of them ever returned. Like a lingering pain in a mother’s heart, yet she did not surrender; instead, it further illuminated her patriotism and resilience. This is a profound message about the unconditional sacrifice of women during wartime.
Nguyen Thi Suot (Mother Suot): her image appears simple yet full of greatness, with the image of a small woman rowing a boat every day to carry soldiers across the river, despite bombs and dangers during the fierce years of war. Though simple, that work contributed greatly to the overall victory of the nation. Her image became a symbol of courage, perseverance, and dedication to the country.
In peacetime, there are many images of Vietnamese women who are gentle and graceful yet not weak, but instead possess a compelling strength. They take on important roles: as wives who take care of the family, as mothers who look after their children, and as women who carry strong character in everyday life. In any profession, Vietnamese women always show that they are not only the keepers of the home but also leaders, entrepreneurs, and independent individuals confidently pursuing their dreams. They are Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao - CEO of VietJet Air, they are H’Hen Nie - Miss Universe Vietnam, a symbol of overcoming hardship, they are frontline female doctors, especially during the pandemic, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien - an outstanding swimmer, they can also be street vendors, workers, laborers, farmers, small traders, and homemakers.
That development does not diminish traditional beauty; on the contrary, it creates a more complete image of women - both gentle and strong; both profound and resilient.
4. Vietnamese Women Across Regions
In Vietnam, each region and each ethnic group presents its own distinct image of Vietnamese women. Though they may differ in appearance, they all share a common beauty rooted in resilience, gentleness, and deep compassion. Women in the North are often characterized by their calm and graceful demeanor. They carry within them a sense of order, modesty, and a strong attachment to traditional family values. Their gentleness is not showy but quiet and enduring. In the Central region, women are closely associated with perseverance and hard work. Having endured the hardships of both nature and history, they have become resilient and profound, while still maintaining a soft and faithful nature. Meanwhile, women in the South embody a free - spirited, open, and energetic presence. They are straightforward yet sincere, warm, and approachable - much like the vibrant rhythm of life in the region. In them lies a harmonious blend of warmth that creates a beauty that feels genuine and deeply human.
Regardless of the region, Vietnamese women have always been a steadfast pillar for both family and society. They contribute to a proud and collective portrait of Vietnamese womanhood, carrying through every era the full essence of the eight golden virtues: “Heroic - Indomitable - Faithful - Industrious.”
5. Not Just a Day, But a Message That Matters
October 20th is a day of appreciation dedicated to half of the world’s population with a flower, a gift, and sweet wishes. But more than anything, sincerity is what makes this day truly meaningful. And October 20th will be more complete if it does not stop at just 24 hours, because appreciation for women should exist all 365 days of the year.
October 20th is a day for us to learn to listen more, share more, and care more than on ordinary days. It is about understanding the pressures they are carrying at work and in the family. It is about recognizing and respecting all the efforts they quietly make every day. Actions that may seem very simple become the most beautiful memories. It may be a congratulatory message in the morning, a cup of coffee prepared in advance, or a gentle hug with the words “thank you, grandmother/mother/you/sister/friend for always being here.” These things do not require much effort, yet they have the ability to touch the heart in the most genuine way.
October 20th is also a reminder of gender equality, that every woman deserves opportunities to grow, to live with her dreams, and to be treated fairly in every aspect of life.
Finally, what makes Vietnamese Women’s Day so special is gratitude, love, and absolute appreciation for grandmothers, mothers, wives... But above all, it is also a reminder that love should not be limited by time, but should be present in every small moment of life. Because the women around us, whoever they are and whatever they are doing, all deserve to be appreciated every single day.
